All the Tribes Are Guilty

3 Hear this word which the Lord has spoken against you, sons of Israel, against the entire ^[a]^(A)family which ^[b]He brought up from the land of Egypt:

²“^(B)You only have I ^[c]known among all the families of the earth;
Therefore I will ^[d]^(C)punish you for all your wrongdoing.”
³Do two people walk together unless they have agreed to meet?
⁴Does a ^(D)lion roar in the forest when he has no prey?
Does a young lion ^[e]growl from his den unless he has captured something?
⁵Does a bird fall into a trap on the ground when there is no ^[f]device in it?
Does a trap spring up from the earth when it captures nothing at all?
⁶If a ^(E)trumpet is blown in a city, will the people not tremble?
If a ^(F)disaster occurs in a city, has the Lord not brought it about?
⁷^[g]Certainly the Lord ^[h]God does nothing
Unless He ^(G)reveals His secret plan
To His servants the prophets.
⁸A ^(H)lion has roared! Who will not fear?
The ^(I)Lord God has spoken! ^(J)Who can do anything but prophesy?

⁹Proclaim on the citadels in ^(K)Ashdod and on the citadels in the land of Egypt and say, “Assemble yourselves on the ^(L)mountains of Samaria and see the great panic within her and the ^(M)oppressions in her midst. ¹⁰But they ^(N)do not know how to do what is right,” declares the Lord, “these who ^(O)store up ^[i]violence and devastation in their citadels.”

¹¹Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:

“An ^(P)enemy, one surrounding the land,
Will take down your fortifications from you,
And your ^(Q)citadels will be looted.”

¹²This is what the Lord says:

“Just as the shepherd ^[j]^(R)snatches from the lion’s mouth a couple of legs or a piece of an ear,
So will the sons of Israel living in Samaria be ^[k]snatched away—
With the ^(S)corner of a bed and the ^[l]^(T)cover of a couch!
¹³Hear and ^(U)testify against the house of Jacob,”
Declares the Lord God, the God of armies.
¹⁴“For on the day that I punish Israel’s offenses,
I will also punish the altars of ^(V)Bethel;
The horns of the altar will be cut off,
And will fall to the ground.
¹⁵I will also strike the ^(W)winter house together with the ^(X)summer house;
The houses of ^[m]^(Y)ivory will also perish,
And the ^(Z)great houses will come to an end,”
Declares the Lord.

Charitable Giving to the Poor and Prayer

6 “Take care not to practice your righteousness in the sight of people, ^(A)to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.

²“So when you ^[a]give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, so that they ^(B)will be praised by people. ^(C)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. ³But when you ^[b]give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, ⁴so that your charitable giving will be in secret; and ^(D)your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

⁵“And when you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to ^(E)stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners ^(F)so that they ^[c]will be seen by people. ^(G)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. ⁶But as for you, when you pray, ^(H)go into your inner room, close your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret; and ^(I)your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

⁷“And when you are praying, do not use thoughtless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard because of their ^(J)many words. ⁸So do not be like them; for ^(K)your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

The Lord’s Prayer

⁹“^(L)Pray, then, in this way:

‘Our Father, who is in heaven,
^[d]Hallowed be Your name.
¹⁰^[e]^(M)Your kingdom come.
^(N)Your will be done,
^[f]On earth as it is in heaven.
¹¹^(O)Give us this day ^[g]our daily bread.
¹²And ^(P)forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
¹³And do not lead us into temptation, but ^(Q)deliver us from ^[h]^(R)evil.^[i]’

¹⁴^(S)For if you forgive other people for their ^[j]offenses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. ¹⁵But ^(T)if you do not forgive other people, then your Father will not forgive your ^[k]offenses.

Fasting; The True Treasure; Wealth

¹⁶“Now ^(U)whenever you fast, do not make a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they ^[l]distort their faces so that they will be noticed by people when they are fasting. ^(V)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. ¹⁷But as for you, when you fast, ^[m]^(W)anoint your head and wash your face, ¹⁸so that your fasting will not be noticed by people but by your Father who is in secret; and your ^(X)Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

“Yet You Have Not Returned to Me”

4 Hear this word, you ^[a]cows of ^(A)Bashan who are on the ^(B)mountain of Samaria,
Who ^(C)exploit the poor, who oppress the needy,
^[b]And say to their ^[c]husbands, “Bring now, that we may ^(D)drink!”
²The Lord ^[d]God has ^(E)sworn by His ^(F)holiness,
“For behold, the days are coming upon you
When ^[e]they will take you away with ^(G)meat hooks,
And the last of you with ^(H)fish hooks.
³You will ^(I)go out through holes in the walls,
One in front of the other,
And you ^[f]will be hurled to Harmon,” declares the Lord.

⁴“Enter Bethel and do wrong;
In Gilgal multiply wrongdoing!
^(J)Bring your sacrifices every morning,
Your tithes every three days.
⁵^[g]Offer a ^(K)thanksgiving offering also from that which is leavened,
And proclaim ^(L)^[h]voluntary offerings, make them known.
For so you ^(M)love to do, you sons of Israel,”
Declares the Lord God.

⁶“But I gave you also ^(N)cleanness of teeth in all your cities,
And lack of bread in all your places;
Yet you have ^(O)not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.
⁷“Furthermore, I ^(P)withheld the rain from you
While there were still three months until harvest.
Then I would send rain on one city,
But on ^(Q)another city I would not send rain;
One part would be rained on,
While the part not rained on would dry up.
⁸So the people of two or three cities would stagger to another city to drink ^(R)water,
But would ^(S)not be satisfied;
Yet you have ^(T)not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.
⁹“I ^(U)struck you with scorching wind and mildew;
The ^(V)caterpillar was devouring
Your many gardens and vineyards, fig trees and olive trees;
Yet you have ^(W)not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.
¹⁰“I sent a ^(X)plague among you ^[i]as in Egypt;
I ^(Y)killed your young men with the sword, along with your ^(Z)captured horses,
And I made the ^(AA)stench of your camp rise up in your nostrils;
Yet you have ^(AB)not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.
¹¹“I overthrew you, as ^(AC)God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,
And you were like a ^(AD)log snatched from a fire;
Yet you have ^(AE)not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.
¹²“Therefore so I will do to you, Israel;
Because I will do this to you,
Prepare to ^(AF)meet your God, Israel.”
¹³For behold, He who ^(AG)forms mountains and ^(AH)creates the wind,
And ^(AI)declares to a person what are His thoughts,
He who ^(AJ)makes dawn into darkness
And ^(AK)treads on the high places of the earth,
^(AL)The Lord God of armies is His name.

¹³But ^(A)we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who ^[a]^(B)are asleep, so that you will not grieve as indeed ^(C)the rest of mankind do, who have ^(D)no hope. ¹⁴For if we believe that Jesus died and rose from the dead, ^(E)so also God will bring with Him ^(F)those who have fallen asleep ^[b]through Jesus. ¹⁵For we say this to you ^(G)by the word of the Lord, that ^(H)we who are alive ^[c]and remain until ^(I)the coming of the Lord will not precede ^(J)those who have fallen asleep. ¹⁶For the Lord ^(K)Himself ^(L)will descend from heaven with a ^[d]^(M)shout, with the voice of ^(N)the archangel and with the ^(O)trumpet of God, and ^(P)the dead in Christ will rise first. ¹⁷Then ^(Q)we who are alive, who remain, will be ^(R)caught up together with them ^(S)in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always ^(T)be with the Lord. ¹⁸Therefore, ^[e]comfort one another with these words.

The Day of the Lord

5 Now as to the ^(U)periods and ^[f]times, brothers and sisters, you ^(V)have no need of anything to be written to you. ²For you yourselves know full well that ^(W)the day of the Lord is coming ^(X)just like a thief in the night. ³While they are saying, “^(Y)Peace and safety!” then ^(Z)sudden destruction ^[g]will come upon them like ^(AA)labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. ⁴But you, brothers and sisters, are not in ^(AB)darkness, so that the day would overtake you ^[h]^(AC)like a thief; ⁵for you are all ^(AD)sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of ^(AE)darkness; ⁶so then, let’s not ^(AF)sleep as ^[i]^(AG)others do, but let’s be alert and ^[j]^(AH)sober. ⁷For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who are drunk, ^(AI)get drunk at night. ⁸But since ^(AJ)we are of the day, let’s ^(AK)be ^[k]sober, having put on the ^(AL)breastplate of ^(AM)faith and love, and as a ^(AN)helmet, the ^(AO)hope of salvation. ⁹For God has not destined us for ^(AP)wrath, but for ^(AQ)obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, ¹⁰^(AR)who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. ¹¹Therefore, ^[l]encourage one another and ^(AS)build one another up, just as you also are doing.
